I always post about the Sunchaser, but I am going take a moment to sing the praises of my 2015 Infiniti Q70L. I bought it new, and have put 33000 miles on it, so I think I’m qualified. I drove it 120 miles to Hollister this morning through a horrible storm to clear up a misunderstanding with the traffic court.

I really like the center stack’s gaudiness, lots of buttons and shiny stuff. Navigation and infotainment is way better than my wife’s Toyota Sienna.

I have usually gravitated to coupes and lighter, sportier cars. Before this, I had an Infiniti G37S coupe (62000 miles in 3 years), and before that I had a 2005 RX-8 GT (160,000 miles in 7 years). But driving all over California the way I do, I decided to get a big luxury sedan. Infiniti offered the most car at the price I got. Having the Sunchaser helps. So far, I love it and it is the perfect long distance vehicle. It weathered some nasty conditions well today.

I hear you! We tend to write about the fun cars but it’s nice to have a big comfortable backup plan, usually one that asks little and gives a lot.

What takes you all over CA like that? Are you doing the commute to the Bay Area thing or just travelling around for business? Some of my coworkers do the 1.5 hour one-way commute. Blows my mind.

Interesting that you like the navigation. I feel like the navigation in both my ’11 BMW 335xi and my wife’s ’16 Subaru Impreza both suck compared to Google Maps. I only use them because they’re built into the dash and I don’t want to clip my phone on there in addition to already having the in-dash screen glaring at me.

We drove an M56 a few weeks ago when my dad still thought he wanted to be done with his X3. Trouble was, this was an M56S, and the “S” apparently stood for “stiff”. The ride was wholly unbearable. I think that the non-S would’ve been much better. Any thoughts?

I once replaced the head unit in my Mazda with one of those fancy LCD/DVD/Nav radios, but I found that I actually preferred the stock stereo and a phone for nav and so I returned it to the stock configuration. In a way it looks somewhat like newer Mazdas that have the LCD screen perched on top of the dash that look like a smartphone in a holder...

I have both a vent clip mount and a CD slot mount for my phone. The vent clip is wobbly and the CD slot will mess up the felt that covers the opening of the CD player (I mostly use this one in rental cars that don’t quite have as much felt on the CD slot as my car).

There’s this not-ashtray bin in the console in front of the shifter that perfectly holds my phone on its side where it keeps the screen pointed up towards me, and allows the charging cord to be plugged in, so that’s my phone spot for now.

Trying to decide if I want to get some other kind of mount for the phone but I don’t have a huge desire for it at the moment.

I bought a great iOttie mount on Amazon via a deal from this very site. It’s an amazingly easy-to-use holder and it did a great job, but since putting the phone in a case with a spare battery I’ve found that the holder doesn’t have arms long enough to properly hold this phone any longer. It works as long as you don’t hit any bumps or pull any g’s which means it’s almost useless for me. I found some extremely thin Velcro and I might try adding some of that in order to give it a little more grip.

I did buy a cheap Motorola Atrix HD phone and car dock to use as a GPS via Google Maps offline mode, but found the performance to be so slow as to be infuriating. I don’t even know where that phone is at the moment, but I suspect I got pissed at it and threw it in the back of the car somewhere.
